IN THE HANGAR

MMS's next big project is a major rebuild on a Helio Courier for Mike Hines Ministries which operates in Central America. Work has begun on this project with Don Penner removing the interior panels and electrical wiring that belonged to the previously removed obsolete radios. The instruments are out and the plane is ready for a new instrument panel. Mike Burch and Chris Jutte repaired the wing flaps and work has started on the wings. Dale Coates, ML Caldwell and Dennis Davis are also working on this project.

The Lancair from Impact North in Canada was in the hangar for minor repairs and paint touch-up. Superficial cracks on the surface of the wings were found and have been repaired. The landing gear was removed and painted. Chuck Egbert and Dennis Satterthwaite completed these repairs. The Lancair (pronounced lance-air) was built from a kit at MMS and has been in service about four years.

Two engines are in the shop from a Piper Aztec for inspection and repair after the propellers struck the runway. ML Caldwell and Mike Burch are working with Dennis Davis on these projects. After extensive airframe work on the DC-3 these engines provide valuable experience.

MMS was asked for help with two planes that were stranded in Coshocton with electrical failures. Dale Coates, Chuck Egbert, ML Caldwell and Dan Moulton came to their rescue and helped them get back into the air.

Dennis Satterthwaite made modifications to the auxiliary ground power unit. Dan Moulton gave it a finishing touch by giving it a coat of paint and labeling its controls and switches.

After inspecting it, Dale Coates places a cylinder back on the shelf with other parts from that engine.

A NEW STAFF CHANGE

After completing the apprenticeship in March of this year Dale Coates was approved to continue his training at MMS. With his newly gained airframe and powerplant mechanic certificate safely in hand, Dale has set sights on the FAA Inspection Authorization. This additional training is a three year program that focuses on FAA regulations and maintenance records.

While working toward the Inspection Authorization, Dale is serving as MMS Technical Director. In addition to supervising daily shop operation, he will receive considerable exposure to the duties of an authorized inspector. This will help Dale as he continues his training.

Dennis Davis and Chuck Egbert complete work on the Lancair.
